There is a wonderful transformation going on throughout New England. Many parks and recreational reservations are seeing a revitalization take place. Towns and cities are trying to encourage people of all ages to get out of their homes, put down their electronics, and simply get some fresh air. We love parks and are always looking for someplace to visit, explore, and just enjoy. Fortunately for us, we don’t have to go very far to enjoy one of our favorite parks, Mine Falls Park in Nashua, New Hampshire. If you have never heard of it, we’ll share why Mine Falls is perfect year round.
Some Background Info
Mine Falls Park got its name from the mining of lead that took place there in the 1700s. In the 1800s man-made canals were dug to provide hydroelectric power for mills in Nashua. The park became part of the New Hampshire Heritage Trail System which extends 130 miles along the Merrimack River . It extends from Massachusetts to Canada. Mine Falls diversity includes forest, wetlands, and open fields. There is also a variety of water systems. Besides the canal system which goes through the park, there is Nashua River to the north, and Millpond to the south.
It’s All About Variety
The variety at Mine Falls is awesome. It offers something for everyone. In the park, you can find rugged trails to run, hike or mountain bike. You can also find simple wide flat trails that meander through the scenic beauty. There are also trails that are very accessible for wheelchairs that are both paved and have lighting at night. Having frequented Mine Falls for many years, it is wonderful to see the transformation into an area that can be appreciated by all.
“If I ever go looking for my heart’s desire again, I won’t look any further than my own back yard. Because if it isn’t there, I never really lost it to begin with.”― L_Frank_Baum-The Wonderful Wizard of Oz
Spring Time Fun
Spring in Mine Falls is full of life. People who didn’t venture out all winter can come experience the flowering of a park blooming. You can almost see the colors all around you becoming richer and fuller. This is a great time to trail run, mountain bike, or simply stroll and enjoy the beauty all around. If you look carefully, you might spot a beaver or swan preparing for the coming year.
Summer is when Mine Falls is in full swing. It is a great time to get out a kayak, canoe, or simply relax and pass the day fishing. We love kayaking all around Mine Falls. If you venture through the canals, you can lazily cruise on glass-like water that offers lots of shade. Boating on the opposite side of the falls, you have great fishing spots, wide open nature, and a chance to get some sun.
- Always bring sunscreen and bug spray (especially if you are going later in the day)
- Bring a hat and water bottle if you are exploring the river. It is really easy to get over heated.
Leaves, Leaves, Leaves
Fall is my favorite time of year, and Mine Falls is a great place to enjoy the changing colors. If you are into autumn foliage but don’t feel like venturing into the mountains, a park like Mine Falls will offer the best variety of colors. This is my favorite time for running in Mine Falls, since I am not a huge fan of the heat. The crisp air, colorful landscapes, and fewer people make for the perfect run.
Winter in Mine Falls is filled with a lot more activity than probably imagine. New Englanders are a hearty people, and more and more of us are enjoying a variety of winter activities. Mine Falls is becoming a hot bed of winter sports. With many trails perfect for cross country skiing and snowshoeing, don’t be surprised to see a skier swooshing by. Also Mine Falls is attracting more mountain bikers who bring fat bikes, the wide tires float over snow and provide bikers a chance to enjoy their sport year round.
Don’t worry if you are not the big outdoor enthusiast. Just put your boots on and stroll through Mine Falls in winter. Especially just after a snow storm. The snow covered trees and sparkling icy canals make for a winter wonderland.
